What are Melamine Faced Boards?
Conti-boards, or as they're commonly called melamine-faced boards - melamine-faced boards are widely common and universally used throughout many applications and industries, whether for design or construction purposes.
MFC is typically favoured over MDF as it is more stable than rivalling materials such as MDF. While commonly utilised by companies and manufacturing, melamine faced boards are also great for DIY lovers or single-person projects.
Melamine-faced boards are often seen on furniture, finishings or other decorative detailings due to their aesthetic nature and colours. Melamine-faced boards are considered crucial to modern-era construction and building, especially in terms of furniture like cabinets or worktops.
MFC (Melamine faced chipboards) is manufactured by bonding resin-impregnated premium papers to particleboard, allowing for a large amount of wear and use.
Properties of Melamine Faced Boards
MFC, like most engineered timber - is comprised of recycled wood fibres from timber work, milling or construction and glued together using a strong adhesive, making MFC ecofriendly.
Due to modern advancements, MFC mimics natural timber, cohesive edging tape colours and grains; it is hard to tell the difference from the real thing.
Melamine is stain resistant and requires no extra effort to varnish or add a finishing.
What makes melamine so popular is that it's durable, resistant to water, hard to shatter and resistant to scratches making it one of the perfect surface materials.
While melamine faced boards may have great heat and water resistance, if water does indeed manage to penetrate the core of the material, it can cause warping and distortion, making MFC not suitable for marine work.
Melamine-faced boards aren't too forgiving of mistakes as improper work with melamine faced boards can reduce the robustness and longevity of the materials; if you aren't the most DIY handy, it would be advised to contact local experts.
The advantages of melamine faced boards are that they're lightweight and versatile, making MFC perfect for a solo project.
Melamine-faced boards are also easily cleanable smooth surfaces making them extremely hygienic, giving you one of the perfect high-quality countertop materials.
MFC doesn't contain any hazardous chemicals or elements such as urea-formaldehyde, making it safer to work on than if you were to use MDF, plywood or other particleboards.
The typical density of MFC ranges from 600 kg/m3 to 680 kg/m3, meaning MFC has a lower density than MDF at 700kg/m3 to 850 kg/m3.

MFC doesn't contain any hazardous chemicals or elements such as urea-formaldehyde making it safer to work on than MDF or plywood; when sawing or sanding with MFC, there's no fear of hazardous particles being released into the environment, putting you and your family at ease.
A downside is that while MFC is easy to produce, it is easily beaten by MDF and may take longer to arrive if not already produced.
