What is Melamine Board ?
MDF stands for Medium Density Fibreboards; standard MDF isn't veneered MDF, and there are differences. Veneered MDF is produced using higher quality wood veneers and fused to your standard MDF, overall improving the wood.
While at face value, the veneer coating helps simulate your average solid wood, there are actually many benefits to the veneer finish. The veneer finish helps designers to use MDF in the same way they would use solid natural wood.
Veneered MDF is a cost-effective option for those on a budget while still gaining the benefits of solid wood, as the veneer protects the materials and you from splintering or other hazards associated with fibreboards.
Properties of Veneered MDF
Veneered Medium Density Fibreboards is an engineered material; however, unlike most engineered woods, Veneered MDF is fire and water-resistant. Having water resistance prevents warping or bending in the wood, an uncommon feature from engineered woods.
Like most engineered woods, veneered MDF is comprised of recycled residue and fibres from woodworking, manufacturing or milling and is very eco-friendly in nature.
Other advantages include that MDF veneered is cheap to produce and buy, especially in bulk.
The veneer added to MDF makes for an aesthetic timber, especially as the veneer is typically cut from high-quality timber, grains and all.
Veneered MDF isn't limited to the indoors or clear weather conditions like typical solid timber such as oak or plywood, as it will not move due to heat or cold.
Crisscross designs can be added to veneered MDF to produce a stronger wood than your average solid timber.
Medium-density fibreboard typically comprises of:
1% paraffin wax
8% water
9% urea-formaldehyde resin glue
82% wood fibres

Known as MDF Medium-Density Fibreboard, the density can actually vary between 500kg and 1,000kg and are classified by light, standard and high-density. It is worth noting that veneered MDF is heavier than plywood. Originally MDF was comprised of wheat; however, due to advancements, higher quality MDF uses binders.

Working With Veneered MDF
Panels/sheets of veneered MDF consist of two faces and grades and is typically substituted out for the natural solid timber such as oak that you would search for - especially for a construction company. Luckily when working with veneered MDF, coming in contact with urea-formaldehyde isn't an issue, unlike other engineered woods.
Veneered MDF is perfect for the outdoors due to its stability, high fire rating and water resistance, preventing swelling or bending. Veneered MDF is light in colour, making MDF perfect to mark or paint on, allowing for great DIY designs or markings for construction.
Unlike other engineered woods, veneered MDF is great for DIY work as it is easily sanded, glued and screwed into without any issues. Sanding and cutting veneer MDF doesn't require any additional protection than natural wood would need due to the lack of urea-formaldehyde.
Designers often work with veneered MDF over standard MDF due to the veneer added, making for an aesthetic timber, especially as the veneer is typically cut from high-quality timber, grains and all.
In terms of cost, MDF is more budget-friendly than general timber or even plywood. Sanded variants are consistent throughout with no graining and a smooth surface, making for great furniture.
Other advantages are that MDF is typically splinter-free compared to typical timber, even when so easily cut with household equipment such as multiple saws (band saw, jigsaw, scroll saw, etc.) or a router.
